Mothers do it all. They are there to hug you on bad days, give advice when you think you don't need it, and be your biggest cheerleader no matter what. Beyond what most people see, mothers are always working in the background. This includes hours spent at doctor appointments, weekends sitting in bleachers for a game, and crafting the perfect birthday treats. Keep reading for Mother's Day history and traditions.

Mom: The Goddess

Mothers do so much that there is a long history of people commemorating the love of their mothers. While America didn’t create the official ‘Mother’s Day’ until 1908, the appreciation for mothers dates back to the ancient times when Greeks and Romans honored the mother goddesses.

In the 16th century, the English had Mothering Sunday where people returned to their mother church for worship. But this was also a time to honor mothers with flowers picked along the way. Sometimes, even with Simnel cakes – a special pastry made of fruit and almond paste.

But it wasn’t just others organizing ways to celebrate motherhood. Mothers also got together to help one another in properly caring for their children and doing what they could to bring peace – like in 1868 with Mother’s Friendship Day where former Civil War soldiers from both sides gathered with their mothers to promote reconciliation within the country.
