Podcast Recap Blog: Smell You Later with Buffalo Larry – Community, Candles, and the Makeshift Union
Welcome to another episode of The Scenting Guy with host Jim Reding, joined by our producer Mike Hewitt, and this episode's special guest: Buffalo Larry, founder of Makeshift Union barbershop in Downtown Las Vegas. This chat is a blend of laughter, community spirit, and the power of scent in branding.
From Haircuts to Hot Towels – The Signature Experience
Jim just had a haircut at Makeshift Union and raved about the full experience — including a scalp massage and hot towel treatment. But what stood out even more? The signature scent filling the shop, thanks to Aroma Retail. From the moment you step in, the scent helps define the shop's "rough luxury" brand vibe — a blend of gritty urban and high-end hospitality.
Larry explains the concept came to him — like all his best ideas — in the bathtub. Rough luxury defines his barbershop's ethos: upscale yet raw, accessible yet luxurious.
Holding Down the Arts District
In business for 9 years, Makeshift Union has witnessed — and helped shape — the revival of the Arts District. Despite hurdles like COVID, road construction, and new parking restrictions, the area is thriving again. Larry's shop has become a community anchor. From neighborhood loiterers on the infamous sidewalk bench to frequent events, Makeshift Union fosters local connection.
Larry draws inspiration from old-school shops like Harry the Hatter in Detroit — places that stayed open during the worst of times and kept their lights on for the community.
Community Spirit in Action
Larry's philosophy goes beyond grooming: it’s about connecting with neighbors. His team is encouraged to know local bar owners and managers by name. It's old-school relationship building in a digital world. And even though he’s active on social media, Larry still swears by a good handshake and a smile.
Scent That Extends the Brand
Thanks to a partnership with Aroma Retail, Makeshift Union doesn’t just smell great — now customers can take the scent home. Candles are now available in-shop under the Makeshift Union label, powered by Aroma Retail's fragrance tech. Jim praises the scent's quality and how well it reflects the brand’s personality.
Growth on the Horizon: A Second Location
Larry shared big news: a second Makeshift Union is coming to Sunset and Durango, right across from IKEA and Durango Casino. The new space is 30% larger and designed by a pro — aiming for salon design award status. This time, fragrance will be a part of the design from day one.
Fun fact: Makeshift Union has always been debt-free and in the black — a major achievement for any small business.
More Than a Barber – Music, Rodeos & Roadshows
Larry isn’t just a barber — he’s also a touring musician, performing at Harley Davidson events, hot rod shows, and rodeos across the country. But hair remains his true passion, especially the connections it brings.

Larry added, "You can look amazing, feel amazing, and now smell amazing too."
