Summer Solstice
The summer solstice occurs in the Northern Hemisphere when the sun travels along its northernmost path in the sky. This results in the longest day and shortest night of the calendar year. This marks the official beginning of Summer in the Northern Hemisphere. The Summer solstice occurs when the North Pole is at its maximum tilt toward the sun - about 23.5 degrees. This results in the most sunlight hours, or the longest day, of the year.
Due to Earth’s tilted axis, the sun does not rise and set at the same locations on the horizon each day. The sun’s rising and setting positions move north or south in the sky as the Earth travels around the sun throughout the year.
This is significant because it is the exact time when the sun reaches its northernmost point and the sun’s path does not change for a brief period of time.
