Since marijuana has been legalized for medicinal and recreational purposes across much of the country, more and more people and business are affected by its unique and distinctive scent. It turns out that there is a specific compound that is responsible for the unique smell of cannabis. Prenylthiol, also known as 3-methyl-2-butene-1-thiol, is an organic chemical found in many plants and herbs, including marijuana. Prenylthiol is C5H10S, which means that it is made of five carbon atoms, 10 hydrogen atoms, and one sulfur atom. Sulfur is not always stinky, but it certainly is in the case of Prenylthiol!
Currently, solutions used to remove the pungent smell of marijuana are costly. Some of which include increasing the air flow and air scrubbing. There are also some natural methods, such as essential oils and candles. These options generally result in masking the unpleasant odor with another competing smell. These methods are not very effective, as they ultimately do not eliminate or change the smell of cannabis.
A priority in the fragrance development process was to find a product that actually worked to get rid of the marijuana smell. More importantly, one that was free of synthetic toxins and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It was critical that the product be safe for people and pets. Many of our customers are businesses, including resorts, that need to be able to diffuse solution safely into public spaces.
After months of research, our fragrance development team has successfully identified three natural scents that safely and effectively remove the skunky smell of weed. These scent molecules smell even more wonderful when combined with Prenylthiol’s radical sulfur atom. These scents smell great on their own but change when they are exposed to the cannabis odor. This is evidence that the scent molecules combine with the marijuana smell, rather than just mask or compete with the odor.

Matchajuana is a fragrance that was developed upon discovery that green tea (i.e., Matcha) releases an odor that gets rid of cannabis molecules. By itself, Matchajuana smells like fresh, crushed green tea leaves. Upon combination with the marijuana smell, the scent evolves into the smell of freshly brewed matcha tea.
Peach By The Gram was created after discovering that as peaches ripen, they release marijuana odor-neutralizing scent molecules. On its own, Peach By The Gram smells like a fresh, unripe peach. When combined with the smell of marijuana, the result is an aroma of a juicy, ripe peach.
Reefresh is a scent that was developed after discovering that as citrus blossoms transform into citrus fruit, they release scent molecules that neutralize the marijuana smell. Without the marijuana smell present, Reefresh smells like a blend of zesty, unripe citrus and light florals. When combined with the marijuana smell, the result is a wonderful floral scent with a light, ripe, citrusy background.
