While most of us order arrangements online, I can still recall how much I loved walking into flower shops to pick out my selections. The fresh, verdant fragrance mingled with the perfume of myriad blooms in the cool aid. I couldn’t help but draw in a deep inhale just to keep enjoying that wonderful smell. The most popular flowers ordered through the year are lilies, tulips, carnations, orchids, and, of course, roses.
Roses are especially popular on Valentine’s Day, making up for almost 85% of floral gifts given. Red being the most purchased and white coming up in second place. But why are roses such popular flowers?
The preference for roses has to do with its incredibly wonderful scent that sets it apart from other flowers. This is easily discernible even in a florist’s shop amid dozens of other types of blooms. If it wasn’t for their perfume, wild roses would never survive as bees are drawn to their fragrance for pollination. Interestingly enough, darker petals usually give off a stronger scent, which could be why red is so often purchased.
The array of colors that roses come in also makes them ideal for any occasion. Some even have up to two or three colors, especially as more hybrid flowers are grown. But roses, especially red and white ones, go beyond our contemporary appreciation. Dating back to the stories of Greek mythology, when a wild boar wounded Adonis and Aphrodite came upon her injured lover. It is said that the mixture of his blood and her tears fell into the earth and grew into a rose bush. This made the first white and red roses.
For all these reasons and likely many more, roses continue to be admired and appreciated today.
